Wampler presents its new compression pedal compression pedalthe Ego 76 Compressor. This nugget is much more than just a compressor; it’s a true immersion in the soul of timeless studio tones, paying homage to the legendary 1176 Peak Limiter, a dynamic-range studio compressor that has shaped the history of music over the decades.
Inspired by the 1176 Peak Limiter
The story of the Ego 76 begins with a bow to the 1176 Peak Limiter, a studio staple since its launch in 1967. The first solid-state peak limiter on the market, its FET circuit gives it a distinctive, “enhanced” sound, especially when pushed to its limits in “British” mode. The Ego 76 seeks to reproduce this magic, offering the same sound but tweaked to inject more energy and brilliance into your guitar tones.
A studio-quality compressor?
The desire to make the Ego 76 a complete compressor in pedal format is reflected in its comprehensive controls: Tone, Attack, Release, Level, Compress, and Parallel Clean Blend. Each of these controls allows precise shaping of your tone and dynamics. The Tone control adds the perfect amount of brightness to capture the 1176’s renowned energy, while the Attack and Release knobs give you essential control over the compression parameters usually reserved for studio gear (attack time and release time respectively).
The Ego 76 adapts to all styles thanks to the Parallel Clean Blend control, a feature inspired by classic studio techniques. This technique, often used to maintain control over levels and enhance parts without sacrificing dynamics, lets you blend your original sound perfectly. The result is a perfect balance between compression and your guitar’s natural voice.
Aware that simply “cloning” the 1176’s FET compression circuit wouldn’t be enough to capture the original sound, Wampler took care to recreate every nuance of the studio preamps, consoles and other equipment found in recordings.
