The Californian brand Strymon has just announced its new EC-1 tape echo delay pedal. With its mix of tube saturation, natural modulation and modern flexibility, discover in this article a complete and detailed presentation of this new pedal!

An Echo inspired by history
The EC-1 is directly inspired by theEchoplex EP-2, a benchmark in tape delay technology. Strymon got hold of an example restored by Cesar Diaz, a renowned technician, who had made a few adjustments for a warmer sound, halfway between the EP-2 and EP-3. This particular version served as the basis for the design of the EC-1.
Strymon’s improved “dTape” algorithm faithfully simulates speed variations, tape wear, mechanical fluctuations and all those irregularities that bring the sound of an authentic tape echo to life.
A pedal designed for versatility
The EC-1 doesn’t just reproduce that legendary vintage sound. As is often the case with Strymon, it also offers customization options tailored to the needs of musicians:
– Two tube preamp modes: one based on the original EP-2 circuit, ideal for brightening up humbuckers, for example, and another inspired by Cesar Diaz’s modifications, offering a more balanced sound.
– A Record Level switch : three positions (Low, Medium, High) for adjusting the saturation of the input signal and the degree of delay coloration.
– Tape Age control: allows you to control tape wear to obtain warmer or cooler echoes.
– Mechanics setting: modifies the impact of mechanical variations (wow & flutter, capstan slippage, tape crackle).
– Stereo input and output: for total sound immersion.
– Artifact-free tap tempo: handy for synchronizing delay in real time.
– MIDI and USB-C: for preset saving and remote control.

An organic, expressive sound
Where the EC-1 excels is in the richness of its echoes. Thanks to precise tape modeling and multiple saturation options, it covers a broad spectrum of sounds: from clear, defined slapback to enveloping layers worthy of psychedelic rock.
Whether you’re looking for a discreet delay to accompany a rhythm or a more pronounced effect ideal for solos, the EC-1 offers a really nice response. If you’re looking for a compact, vintage, inspiring and easy-to-handle tape delay, this pedal could be just what you’re looking for!
