Beetronics recently unveiled its latest masterpiece: the Abelha Tropical Fuzz.
This pedal is directly inspired by “Tropicália”. Tropicálism is a cultural and artistic movement that emerged in Brazil in the 1960s. Blending psychedelia and Brazilian culture, it gave rise to iconic artists such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and the group Os Mutantes. Lacking access to equipment manufactured in other countries, these groups and artists invented and built their own sounds and pedals, creating a unique and recognizable sound.
Beetronics’ Abelha pedal is directly inspired by the fuzz aesthetic of that era. The Abelha, which means “bee” in Portuguese, captures the essence and vintage charm of this tropical fuzz movement.
A trio of distinct fuzzes
The Abelha offers three distinctive fuzz sounds via a switch in the center of the pedal. “Polen” delivers a jerky, sputtering tone reminiscent of a dying battery in a Germanium fuzz style. “Nectar” offers a round, imposing fuzzy option, while “Honey” offers a slightly more restrained gain (plus overdrive) but with impressive versatility. The “Buzz” and “Loud” controls adjust fuzz and volume respectively, while the “HI” and “LO” controls offer a versatile range for shaping your EQ to perfection.
Dive into psychedelia with Tropical Mode
When the footswitch is pressed twice , “Tropical Mode” adds a high-pass filter that instantly transports you to the tropics (with a nice change in LED color). It can also be held down for an “ephemeral” sound. Three footswitch profile options let you adjust the tempo changes for the ephemeral function, according to your preferences.
More than a pedal, a work of art?
The Abelha isn’t just a pedal, it’s a work of art handcrafted in California. And what a design it is… In both format and graphics, this pedal definitely stands out from the crowd, and promises to turn every guitarist’s gaze to your pedalboard…
