It’s often the very first pedal you buy, and it’s also the one you keep the longest: it makes a clean amp sing, adds character to a rhythm track, pushes a solo forward, or brings an already overdriven amp to life. The downside is that the selection is vast, ranging from €25 clones to €400 boutique pedals.

So we’ve updated our 2024 guide. Here’s what’s inside: how to choose your overdrive based on your amp and playing style, followed by our selection of 26 current pedals, organized into five categories (classics, amp-in-a-box, versatile, budget-friendly, and mini pedals). We’ll wrap up with settings, placement in the signal chain, and an FAQ to answer the most common questions.

How to Choose the Right Overdrive Pedal?

An overdrive pedal replicates the gentle saturation of a tube amp pushed just a little too hard. Unlike distortion, it retains a lot of dynamic range: play softly or turn down the guitar’s volume, and the sound clears up; play harder, and it starts to growl. That’s what makes it so enjoyable and so responsive to the rest of your gear.

Your amp: With a clean tube amp, almost any overdrive pedal sounds good. With a transistor amp or when playing unplugged, a more “complete” pedal with an EQ—or even an amp simulation—will make your life easier.

The desired gain level: a light blues crunch, a thick rock sound, or a boost to push an already crunchy amp into further distortion all require different pedals.

Transparent or colored: A so-called “transparent” overdrive (Klon, Bluesbreaker) preserves the character of your guitar and amp. A colored overdrive like the Tube Screamer emphasizes the mids and adds its own signature sound.

Controls: A simple Tonecontrol is often enough, but a two- or three-band EQ, a clipping selector, or a “Hot” mode add flexibility.

Size and power: mini pedal, standard size, or dual overdrive; battery-powered or not; current draw in mA. Keep these factors in mind before filling out your pedalboard.

Budget: Today’s low-priced models are surprisingly good. An expensive pedal isn’t necessarily “better”; it may just be more refined or more versatile.

If you’re trying to decide between several types of gain effects, our guide to distortion pedals and our fuzz comparison will help you tell them apart.

The Best Overdrive Pedals by Category

1. There are three common ways to use it:

When using a clean amp: Set Level to “1” (same volume as the clean tone), Drive to halfway, and Tone to the 12 o’clock position. Then turn up the Drive until you reach the desired tone, and adjust the Tone based on the amp’s brightness.

As a boost in front of an amp that’s already crunching: Drive at minimum, Level above the unit. The pedal pushes the amp, causing it to distort more, and the mids tighten up. This is the typical setting for metal guitarists using a TS9 or an SD-1.

In a stacked setup: two low-gain overdrives stacked together often produce a richer sound than a single pedal cranked all the way up. The first acts as a boost, while the second provides the basic overdrive.

Also keep in mind the guitar’s volume: with a good overdrive, turning it down slightly should clean up the sound. This is the best way to switch from rhythm to solo without touching your pedalboard.

Where should you place your overdrive in the signal chain?

As a general rule, the overdrive pedal goes after the tuner, wah, and compressor, and before the modulation effects, delay, and reverb. If you have multiple gain pedals, it makes sense to go from the least saturated to the most saturated, but the reverse order can also produce interesting results. We go into detail about all the combinations in our article on the order of gain pedals, and more broadly in our guide to setting up your pedalboard properly.

One exception to keep in mind: vintage fuzz pedals don’t like having a buffered overdrive pedal in front of them. Instead, place them first in the signal chain.

FAQ: How to Choose the Right Overdrive Pedal

What’s the difference between overdrive and distortion?

Overdrive mimics a tube amp pushed just a little: the saturation is smooth and dynamic. Distortion saturates the sound more and compresses it further, with less response to touch.

What’s the best overdrive pedal for beginners?

The Boss SD-1, the Boss BD-2, or the Ibanez TS Mini are excellent first choices. If you’re on a very tight budget, the Behringer TO800 or the Harley Benton Vintage Overdrive do the job very well.

What is a transparent overdrive?

It’s an overdrive that preserves the character of your guitar and amp rather than imposing its own tone. The Klon Centaur and its successors (Soul Food, Tumnus), the Morning Glory, and the Timmy are the best-known examples.

Does an overdrive pedal work with a transistor amp?

Yes, but the result depends a lot on the amp. A pedal with a full EQ or an “amp-in-a-box” (Friedman BE-OD, Charlie Brown V4, SansAmp GT2) generally produces better results than a simple boost-style overdrive.

Can you use two overdrives at the same time?

Yes, it’s actually very common. Stacking two low-gain overdrives produces a richer, thicker sound. Dual overdrives like the Strymon Sunset or the JHS Wanderer are designed for this purpose.

Should you choose a true bypass or buffered overdrive?

Both work. In a long chain of cables and pedals, at least one good buffer prevents high-end loss. On a small pedalboard, true bypass is more than enough.

Can you use an overdrive as a boost?

Yes: set the Drive to the minimum and the Level above one. The pedal will drive your amp harder and give your solos more presence.

How much should you spend on a good overdrive?

For between €50 and €150, you’ll find pedals that are more than sufficient for live performances and studio use. Above that price range, you’re mostly paying for additional settings, boutique craftsmanship, or a second overdrive in the same unit.

Tube
